Engineers and Businesspeople
Management of Contractors

The main duty of a contractor is to plan and manage construction work under their control so that it is carried out in a way that controls risks to health and safety. They have a range of other duties that depend on whether more than one contractor is involved in the project. Contractors also need to comply with directions given to them by the principal designer or principal contractor.

We manage contractors on site with trust and a robust yet flexible approach with an auditable trace of management and monitoring set against production that clients understand.

        Safe Systems of Work

A safe system of work (SSoW) is a formal procedure based on a systematic examination of work in order to identify the hazards.

It defines safe methods of working which eliminate those hazards or minimise the risks associated with them. Put simply, a safe system of work is a defined method of doing a job in a safe way.

Employers must ensure that safe systems of work are available for all work activities that create significant risk, in the same way that it’s their responsibility to carry out for all work activities.

Safe systems of work become particularly important when significant residual risk remains after all practicable control measures have been introduced into work processes and where control measures that are usually present need to be removed so that a task risk assessment can be completed.

             Site Set Up

Setting up a construction site office is not a simple task that can be ignored till the later stages of the preconstruction phase. It should be considered as soon as possible.

It is vitally important that all the welfare requirements are put in place, site rules, information, instruction and inductions for the use of the site and its welfare. CDM North would check the setup of the construction site set up  to ensure all paperwork and documentation is in order. We would also make sure that what needs to be provided is provided in good time. If requested CDM North are able to set up the whole site project facility meeting as required to satisfy the construction design management regulations 2015.

Site Inspections and Audits

External site health and safety inspections and audits by independent competent health and safety professionals are now considered an essential part of construction site health and safety arrangements. CDM North are able to provide independent site health and safety inspections and audit services.

CDM North can carry out these inspections and audits to provide reassurance and peace of mind to the Clients that the construction work on their projects is being carried out in accordance with legal requirements and best practice.

Permits to Work

It’s important to find out how a project’s safety management is performing and whether it’s adequate and suitable and sufficient to cover the hazards during the construction phase and specific job related activities.

Monitoring starts with a full review of the construction phase plan. This highlights the areas of concern during production. Without been intrusive, regular monitoring and control processes continually track, review, adjust and report on the project’s health and safety performance.

The monitoring ensures the project remains on track, on budget and on time by reducing potential stoppages related to accidents and near misses. Project Monitoring is proactive rather than reactive, and acts as an early warning system for the Client / Principal Contractor by anticipating potential issues relating to hazards

A permit-to-work system is a formal recorded process used to control work which is identified as potentially hazardous. It is also a means of communication between site/installation management, plant supervisors and operators and those who carry out the hazardous work.

A permit-to-work is not simply permission to carry out a dangerous job. It is an essential part of a system which determines how that job can be carried out safely, and helps communicate this to those doing the job. It should not be regarded as an easy way to eliminate hazard or reduce risk.

The issue of a permit does not, by itself, make a job safe - that can only be achieved by those preparing for the work, those supervising the work and those carrying it out. In addition to the permit-to-work system, other precautions may need to be taken
